Do you love green bananas/plantain? I’m sure you will love this matoke recipe. If you are looking for a healthy side dish meal, you have to try this spicy mashed matoke and potato recipe. This matoke recipe is not only delicious, its healthy and easy to make too. One of the things I love about this matoke recipe is the spicy taste.

So, over the weekend made this side dish to accompany a chicken recipe which I will share soon. This matoke recipe is from green bananas and potatoes and everyone love them πŸ™‚ I’m sharing this recipe with you for the reason that I love green bananas and potatoes. If these two ingredients would ever disappear from the earth, I would be depressed and mourn their passing πŸ˜€

I have eaten this matoke recipe and potatoes many times and it is simply delicious. To make this recipe, you need green bananas, potatoes, onions, garam masala , pepper and a bunch of fresh dhania (coriander).

How to Cook Spicy Matoke with Potato Recipe


4 Green bananas (unripe)

4 potatoes

Salt to Taste

1 tsp of cumin spice

1 tsp of garam masala

Pepper to taste

1 bunch of fresh Coriander (Dhania)


Step 1: Peel the bananas and potatoes and clean them

Step 2: Boil the green bananas and potatoes in salty water until ready

Step 3: Mash the bananas and potatoes together and set aside

Step 4: In a cooking pot, fry the onions until soft

Step 5: Add salt, pepper, cumin, garam masala and coriander (dhania)and cook for 1 minute. potas 3

Step 6: Add in the mashed bananas and potatoes

Step 7: Mix the mashed matoke with the spice sauce perfectly on very low heat.

Step 8: Serve your spicy mashed matoke and potatoes with stew or fried meat.

  2. I’m making this tonight for a Kenya themed potluck. I wanted to let you know the onion portion of your recipe isn’t in the ingredient list. It looks from the photo to be about one small red onion? Just a heads up! I’ll let you know how it goes. Making a beef stew curry to serve on top πŸ™‚
